The pro cyclists will also be out and about enjoying a bit of down-time and with our links into the World Tour we will be able to direct you to the most popular cafe’s for some people watching.

Don’t stay out too late though because we have Aperitvo and dinner back at the hotel.

On the day of your arrival in Catania we will collect you from Catania airport and take you to your luxury 5-star resort hotel where you can freshen up and relax before heading out to explore the city.

To describe the beauty and magic of Sicily in a few short paragraphs does not do it justice. Sicily’s rich history, cultural treasures and dazzling landscapes are breathtaking and unforgettable! The island has been at the crossroads of the Mediterranean since the time of legends and evidence of this rich history can be seen and tasted everywhere!

During your stay in Sicily you will be based in Catania, an ancient port city at the foot of Mt. Etna and the perfect location from which to tour the island’s most impressive destinations and landmarks. Occupied by the Greeks in the VIII century B.C, and by Syracusans, Romans, Byzantians, Arabs and Normans in succession, each civilisation has contributed to Catania’s unique characteristics and diverse rich culture.

Beginning your dream holiday in Catania’s historic centre, a Unesco-listed world heritage site, you will be energised by the buzz and activity of this ancient city. Black-and-white Palazzi towering over sweeping Baroque piazzas, statues and the ornate Cathedrals, with wonderful restaurants, bars and cafes at every turn. The food is a legacy of its past and undeniably the most interesting and delectable food you will find in all of Italy (and Greece!). Catania is famous for its iconic ‘pasta alla Norma’ and the extraordinary ‘La Pescheria’ fish market supplies some of the best seafood restaurants in Europe.

After settling into your hotel, you have a chance to explore this beautiful town and sample some of the mouth-watering food. There will be much buzz and excitement in and around the town as the Giro d’Italia organisers set up for the following day’s stage start. Check out some of the activities and immerse yourself in the Sicilian dream prior to returning to your hotel where the group will have a planning meeting over an Apertivo and group dinner.

Day 2, Catania

Tuesday 8th May
Today’s Ride
From Catania to Caltagirone
Total Route 73km with 800 m elevation (3:00)

Ride description

You will have time for a sleep in and nice leisurely breakfast today as the plan is to watch the start of Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia in Catania and then ride to the Stage 4 finish town of Caltagirone in time to watch what should be a fascinating finish. Caltigirone is on a hill so the pros will have to climb the last few kilometres into the stage finish.  We will position ourselves close to the finish so that we can watch the action up close and enjoy the spectacle of the passing caravan and fast finishers.

After the stage finish we will travel back to our hotel in the support vehicles with time for a shower and change of clothes and then on to Aperitivo before you head out to explore Catania. No doubt you will have already noticed the amazing scenery which makes Sicily such a unique place to ride a bike. This part of Sicily is scattered with vineyards, olive groves and orchards and the terrain is generally rolling. The Italian people love cycling and cyclists so you will feel welcome and part of the culture of the country. May is usually ideal for cycling with average daily temperatures in the mid 20’s (celsius) so your spirits are sure to be high.

When you get back from your ride our mechanic will take your bike, give it a wash and check it over ready for tomorrow.  This is a daily ritual and you will soon get used to the fact that your bike magically disappears each day and reappears the next morning clean and ready to ride.

All Guests

After our usual Aperitivo and planning session it is time for you to head out for dinner and settle into one of the many wine bars, cafe’s and restaurants that rim the piazza’s in the historical centre.

Sightseeing description

After a leisurely start to your morning and a scrumptious buffet-style breakfast, you have the morning free to wander back into the city centre, watch the pandemonium of the ‘race caravan’ as it makes its way through the streets of Catania before the start of the race… an entertaining spectacle to say the least. Also a chance to checkout the highlights of the city.

Not to be missed are the ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre, built in 300 BC and now surrounded by modern buildings. Close by you will find a hidden gem – the ancient Roman Baths “the Archaeological Complex Terme della Rotonda”. Housed in a circular structure and dating back to the first and second centuries AD, you can see parts of an intricate mosaic floor and sections of a steam bath. Also close by is the Palazzo Platamone – Palazzo Della Cultura; a spectacular Medieval palace and former monastery which is now a cultural venue hosting art exhibitions and concerts. For a glimpse at the decadence and wealth of the 1400’s, the Maganelli Palace is well worth a tour. The Maganelli Palace is right in the centre of the historic old town. The Baroque style architecture, remarkable hanging garden (on two levels connected by a staircase) all rest on the ancient city walls, with two fountains and a nymphaeum which is a beauty to behold.

For lovers of shellfish and citrus, tuna and swordfish, eggplant and tomatoes, pistachios, almonds and ricotta, the traditional Sicilian cuisine will delight. Sicily’s timeless recipes (from the simplest cannolo to the most exquisite fish couscous) will make you want to taste it all!  After a long and satisfying lunch you will be ready for a Mediterranean siesta and some pampering back at your hotel. Relax by the pool or on the private beach in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and sea.

Following our evening Aperitivo and planning session, you are free to independently dine at a restaurant of your own choice…there are many to choose from so we can point you in the right direction!

All Guests

After our usual Aperitivo and planning session it is time for you to head out for dinner and settle into one of the many wine bars, cafe’s and restaurants that rim the piazza’s in the historical centre.

Day 3, Catania - Agrigento

Wednesday 9th May
Today’s Ride
From Gela to Agrigento
Total Route 90 km with 1,300 m elevation (3:45)

Ride description

We have a beautiful route planned for today which finishes in Agrigento where we will catch up with the sightseeing group at the Valley of the Temples for lunch and a guided tour.

We will travel in the support vehicles for about 90 minutes to our start point at Gela and then follow the coastal road to Agrigento. This part of the coast is spectacular and we will be riding through a mostly rural setting with farms and vineyards as well as through the small resorts and villages that pepper the coast. It may not be challenging from the perspective of elevation but we are sure to encounter some coastal breezes so the 90km route should offer something for everyone.

We have arranged for you to shower and change at a local Cantina and then onto a picnic lunch and Valley of the Temples tour. The Valley of the Temples is an archaeological site included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list and remains the largest archaeological site in the world, with 1,300 hectares! The site is actually located on a ridge outside the town of Agrigento despite its reference to a ‘valley’. Surrounded by olive groves and almond orchards and overlooking the south-east coast of Sicily, the place is steeped in beauty and legend. Agrigento was founded around 582 BC by descendants of Greeks from Rhodes and Crete, there are numerous temples, an amphitheatre, necropoli, houses, streets and structures that formed this ancient city town. The remains of the Temple of Hera (Juno), and The Temple of Concord, both in Doric style and built around 440 BC, are illuminated at night and are truly a sight to behold.

After a day of cycling and sightseeing amongst the ancient sites we will transfer back to Catania where you can download and share your amazing photos and the indescribable experiences of your day.

Today we will take you to one of the most outstanding examples of ancient Greek civilisation in the world! We will head out early after breakfast as the drive to Agrigento, to ‘The Valle dei Templi’ is just over two hours. You will be taken on a magical guided archaeology tour of the valley where you will be informed and entertained by the stories and legends that lie within this ancient city.

Agrigento was founded around 582 BC by descendants of Greeks from Rhodes and Crete. You will see the remains of numerous temples, an amphitheatre, necropoli, houses, streets and structures that formed this ancient city town. The Temple of Hera (Juno), and The Temple of Concord, both in Doric style and built around 440 BC, are illuminated at night and are truly a sight to behold.

There are so many temples in this one location that we will not be able to see them all but our guide will take us to the most legendary and interesting examples of the era. The tour will include the Temple of Heracles (who was one of the most venerated deities in ancient Greece) which is one of oldest temples in the Valley, the Temple of Olympian Zeus (built in 480 BC to celebrate the city-state’s victory over Carthage) and the Temple of Castor and Pollux which is now the symbol of modern Agrigento. The Temple of Vulcan, also dating from the 5th century BC. was the most imposing construction in the valley and the Temple of Asclepius, located far from the ancient town’s walls was revered by pilgrims seeking cures for illness. The Valley is also home to the Tomb of Theron, a large pyramid shaped monument that was built to commemorate the Romans killed in the Second Punic War.

Your guided tour in the Valley of the temples along with a fabulous picnic lunch under the olive trees, will be unforgettable! After a day amongst the ancient sites we will head back to Catania where you can download and share your amazing photos and the indescribable experiences of your day.

Day 4, Catania - Taormina

Thursday 10th May
Today’s Ride
From Catania to Etna
Total Route 72km with 2,200 m elevation (3:00)
Ride description

We will have time for a sleep in and a lazy breakfast as we have to build up energy for our epic ride. Today we will ride from Catania to the top of one of the highest active volcanoes in Europe; Mt Etna. We will intersect that race route at Ponte Barca and continue our ride to the finish at Rifugio Sapienza, Mt Etna using the same route that the pros will follow a few hours after us.

We will make a few stops along the way as it is always fun to stop in at the small towns along the race route in this part of Italy. Many of the residents and businesses will have been planning their Giro activities for months in advance of the stage and they are always excited to see cycling fans from other parts of the world to join them in the love of and passion for cycling. These are the moments that we can’t plan for but our guests will rave about for years to come.

We will ride to the support vehicles which will be located near the stage finish, grab some refreshments and then find the best viewing spot to join  the rest of the avid cycling fans to wait to see who will conquer the first major climb of this 101’st edition of the Giro d’Italia. Last year the GC contenders where content to keep a watchful eye on each other and not expend too much energy and Jan Polanc won the stage from the early break. Will we see a new GC star emerge on these iconic slopes or will we see the current flock of contenders battle for the ultimate glory of wearing the Maglia Rosa in Rome. Regardless of the result it is sure to be a great day.

After the stage finish we will travel back to Catania in the support vehicles in time for shower, change of clothes and Aperitivo.

All Guests

At the end of a epic day, we will head back to Catania for our evening Aperitivo and planning session, after which you are free to independently dine at a lovely local restaurant of your choice.

If you think that nothing will top yesterday’s trip to Agrigento, then you are in for a real treat!

After a leisurely start to your day, we will drive for about 50 minutes to one of the most beautiful towns in all of Italy; the breathtaking Taormina. We will commence the day trip with a tour of the Teatro Antico di Taormina and then have a group lunch before heading off to explore the town.

Affectionately referred to as ‘The Pearl of Europe’, Taormina sits on a hilltop overlooking the stunning Ionian Sea and with the majestic Mount Etna in the background. The historic centre is packed with designer boutiques, specialty stores, Sicilian artisan pottery and artwork and quality gift stores…all adorned with hanging pots and flowering plants…spectacular to see. The meandering cobbled-stone and marble covered streets with narrow stairways leading up and down the town are dotted with numerous cafes, restaurants and bars….and over-flowing with people! The town is famous for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient GrecoRoman theatre built in the 3rd century BC and still used today. The views from the town and the theatre are awesome.

Looking down from the town you will see the cliffs drop to the sea, forming coves with sandy beaches. There is even a tiny island (Isola Bella) with its own nature reserve that can be reached via a narrow stretch of sand. And to top it all off, perched atop a nearby rocky outcrop jutting out into the sea, is the Taormina castle, dating back to the Byzantine era and built to defend against the Arabs. The town and its surrounds are spectacular in every way imaginable.

All Guests

At the end of a glorious day in Taormina, we will head back to Catania for our evening Aperitivo and planning session, after which you are free to independently dine at a lovely local restaurant of your choice.

Day 5, Catania - Syracuse

Friday 11th May
Today’s Ride
From Catania to Catania
Total Route 96 km with 1,100 m elevation (4:00)
Ride description

If you think about Sicily and cycling you usually think of Etna and the coast but there is so much more to cycling in Sicily. Today, we will give you a taste of some of the amazingly diverse cycling terrain that abounds on this beautiful island.

Yesterday was epic so we will plan for a sleep in and eat a late breakfast in the restaurant or by the pool before we head out towards Riserva naturale Orientata Pantalica on one of the prettiest cycling routes of this tour. We start off from our hotel and head south along the coast and then into the farmland of Sicily. One of the food essentials that Sicily is famous for is olives and today we will see olive groves and ancient wild olive trees along almost our entire route.  As usual, we have selected quiet roads and while they are a bit rough in sections we will be treated to exquisite vistas with only the sound of nature (and the occasional farmer). Another feature of this area is the ancient stone fences which line many of the roads of the region so it is quite easy to forget which era we are in (except of course for your high-tech carbon bike)…. No need to worry about punctures as our support vehicle is always with us ready to hand out a drink or change a wheel.

We will stop in for a coffee at Carlentini and check out the wonderful old town centre. Carlentini was founded in 1551 by King Charles V to protect the coast from Arab invasions and is famous for the incredible open-air mosaics: such as the street Mosaic of Via Nazionale. After coffee we will ride back to Catania arriving with plenty of time for a massage or a nap (or both).

All Guests

You will have much to share when you get back to your hotel! We are eating local tonight so following Aperitivo and our planning session we will dine at the hotel.

Sightseeing description

Today we will take you south to Syracuse, the city that encapsulates Sicily’s timeless beauty. In its heyday this was the largest city in the ancient world, even bigger than Athens and Corinth. Ancient Greek ruins, built in 734BC, rise out of lush citrus orchards, cafe tables spill onto dazzling baroque piazzas, and honey-hued medieval lanes lead down to the sparkling blue sea.

Archimedes, Plato and Saint Paul loved Syracuse, and with good reason. It was one of the most important cities of the ancient Greek world, and the most important in Greek and Roman Sicily. It was also one of the most beautiful. The archeological park is extensive, while the old city, Ortygia, with its charming, narrow streets, boasts some fascinating treasures. The Cathedral was the ancient Temple of Athena, whose columns and walls are still visible throughout the church. Carved into a limestone hypogeum, Europe’s oldest Mikveh, is a special piece of Judaic heritage not to be missed. The ruins of the ancient city constitute the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis, another one of Sicily’s greatest archaeological sites and home to the pearly white 5th century BC Teatro Greco. Built out of the rocky limestone hillside, this 16,000-capacity amphitheatre comes to life with an annual season of classical theatre. The hillside is riddled with catacombs and filled with citrus and magnolia trees overlooking the grotto of Dionysios – The Orecchio di Dionisio grotto’. This 23m-high grotto extending 65m back into the cliffside, was named by the famous Italian painter Caravaggio. He named it after the tyrant Dionysius, who is said to have used the almost perfect acoustics of the quarry to eavesdrop on his prisoners. Adjoining the area is the entrance to the 2nd-century Amphitheatro Romano, originally used for gladiatorial combats and horse races.

Close by is the 12th century Norman castle, built over the Temple of Venus, who was worshipped by the ancient Elymians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. Although the castle’s rooms are off-limits, visitors can explore the grassy interior courtyard, filled with ruined foundations and flanked by an impressive stone wall allegedly built by Daedalus. Stealing the show are the spectacular panoramic vistas extending to San Vito Lo Capo on one side and the Saline di Trapani on the other.

Syracuse restaurants are renown for their charm and ambience so we have planned a late and long lunch in a fabulous local sea-side side café for the whole group. We will still have time for some final sightseeing and shopping before heading back to Catania.

Day 6, Catania - Taormina

Saturday 12th May
Today’s Ride
From Catania to Catania
Total Route 82 km with 2,100 m elevation (3:25)
Ride description

The Giro is now well and truly move on and into mainland Italy so we think it will be a real treat to ride up Etna again, but this time we will tackle the Eastern slope.

We need to have breakfast a bit earlier today so that we can get underway to avoid some of the traffic on the busier sections of this route. After Zafferana there is less traffic and the road is well maintained tarmac which winds through beautiful wooded areas on the lower slope and turns into frozen lava streams on the higher slopes. The road is raised over recent lava flows which formed in lava from around 2000. If Etna is active there can be black volcanic sand covering the road so we would have to assess the conditions in that case, tricky for ascending and for descending but there is a certain rush from riding up a smoking, rumbling volcano! Fun fact; the word Etna is from the Greek and means “I burn”.

The main climb starts from Zafferana Etnea, and the ascent to Rifugio Sapienza is 18 km long with an average gradient of 7.2 % so it is a challenge by any standard and similar to many other famous climbs in Europe. On the way back to Catania we will ride down the western road through Nicolosi and take a direct route to the hotel where you will have time for a massage, nap or swim at the beach or in the pool before we head off for our final Aperitivo and dinner.

All Guests

This being the last night of the tour, we have arranged a group dinner at one of our favourite restaurants. This is a family run restaurant and has been consistently serving outstanding food for 3 generations. A final chance to savour the delicious Sicilian cuisine, sample some local wine and take in the astounding sunset views, the glittering coastline and the lit-up villages dotted along Etna’s slopes. Guaranteed to be an evening you will never forget and a magical way to top off your Sicilian vacation.

Today you can enjoy a slow start to your day, reflect on your amazing Sicilian odyssey and indulge in some pampering and relaxation before we head out for the afternoon. A good chance to have one final dip in the crystal clear warm waters of the Ionian Sea or settle by the pool with a glass of home-made lemonade or a caldo shakerato (the best iced coffee ever!).

After lunch we will take you back to Taormina for one more look as we know from experience, you will be dying to see it again! The cycling group will join the sightseeing group so that the entire group will get a chance to explore the town, absorb its majestic ambience and be transfixed by its history.

For the fashionistas among you, the main street rivals the best of the Parisian shopping strips and impossible to ignore! Alternating between souvenir shops and restaurants are the many attractive high-end boutiques that will have every discerning shopper stop in their tracks. From handmade fine Italian leather bags, shoes, and jackets, to designer labels like Prada, Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Moschino, Taormina has it all. A great chance to get that stylish Italian look in readiness for the traditional evening promenade and Aperitivo this evening.
